Golden Globes 2021: The Full Winners List

The 78th annual Golden Globe Awards, during which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association reward the best in television and film from the past year, kicked off the 2021 Hollywood awards season on Sunday. But what is typically the industry’s biggest party was less festive this year.

Under the cloud of the pandemic, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted the show remotely—with Fey in New York City’s Rainbow Room and Poehler at the Beverly Hilton Hotel—while nominees joined via video conference from their homes and hotel rooms. The only in-person audience was frontline and essential workers invited to watch.

The event was also shrouded in scandal: The HFPA, which has long been prone to controversy, has faced ramped-up criticism in recent weeks. Despite a years-long focus on diversity in Hollywood, the 87-person group has zero Black members and has not had one for over 20 years. Stars like Sterling K. Brown and Laura Dern, both previous Globe winners, as well as Kerry Washington, Ellen Pompeo, Patton Oswalt, Busy Phillips and more have spoken out through the #TimesUpGlobes movement.

“The journey of a Black artist is littered with obstacles in creating, developing and being acknowledged for our work,” nominee Viola Davis posted on Instagram. “If we continue to keep silent, the younger generation of artists will have the exact same load to carry. No more excuses.”

Hosts Fey and Poehler lampooned the group for their lack of diversity, and called on the group to do better. “Award shows are stupid. They are all a scam put on by Big Red Carpet,” they said.

The lack of diversity was reflected in the nominees, with Michaela Coel’s critically acclaimed series I May Destroy You left out of any television categories, and films like Judas and the Black Messiah, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and One Night in Miami failing to make the Best Picture categories. That said, some of the biggest winners of the night were people of color: Nomad director Chloé Zhao took home two awards, and Daniel Kaluuya, John Boyega and Andra Day won acting awards. In the most emotional moment of the evening, Chadwick Boseman won the Best Actor, Motion Picture, Drama posthumously for starring in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

There’s also been a renewed look at the expensive campaigns funded by the networks, studios and streaming platforms hoping to give a leg up to their series or films. An investigation in the Los Angeles Times exposed that Netflix, for example, flew members of the HFPA to the Paris set of Emily in Paris for a luxurious vacation. These perks not only raise ethical concerns, but also ones of tone-deafness given the pandemic and its economic consequences.

The television winner of the night was The Crown, which won four awards in the television drama categories, while comedy Schitt’s Creek and limited series The Queen’s Gambit, each won two. Nomadland and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm took home top honors for film.
